A Warm Twist On Winter

Hello everybody!  This is Layna
Hurley, your Oneida County
Dairy Princess.  Well, winter
has arrived, the snow is falling,
people are running around
holiday shopping and the kids
are playing in the snow! It
doesn’t matter if you are a
young child having fun
making snowman, sledding,
skating or just making snow
angels.  Maybe you are a
teenager going skiing or
snowboarding or an adult
going snowmobiling, or
maybe you are coming in
from shoveling, plowing or
from doing chores in the
barn.  No matter what you are
doing, you need to replenish
the nutrients that were used
during your activities.  There
is no better way to replenish
those nine important nutrients
and stay warm than drinking
hot chocolate made with
milk.  Here is a recipe for hot
chocolate with a twist, and
since it contains dairy, it can
count towards your 3 servings
of dairy a day.  Remember 1
serving can be gotten from an
8oz serving of milk or yogurt,
or a 2oz piece of cheese, so be
sure to get your 3 servings a
day.

Candy Cane Cocoa
Ingredients
4 cups milk
3 (1 oz) square semisweet
chocolate, chopped
4 peppermint candy canes,
crushed
1 cup whipped cream
4 small peppermint candy
canes

Directions
1. In a saucepan, heat milk
until hot, but not boiling.
Whisk in the chocolate and the
crushed peppermint candies
until melted and smooth.
Pour hot cocoa into four
mugs, and garnish with
whipped cream.  Serve each
with a candy cane stirring
stick.  Makes 4 servings.
